Pain is simply your body trying to get
your attention. Something is injured or not functioning quite
right. AN ALARM SYSTEM if you will.
The question is, “should I just ride this out or ask for
help?” All too often the answer is, “let’s ride it
out”.
And that’s appropriate for most aches and pains but it’s wise to HONE
YOUR SKILLS so you can avoid unnecessary medical expenses, prolonged
pain, low productivity, and the low emotional state that can come with
all of those things.
Here are a few situations to which you should PAY CLOSE ATTENTION and get
evaluated by a physician quickly. Consider urgent care.
- Persistent pain in the
head like you’ve never experienced before
- Unrelenting pain anywhere
in the torso, abdomen, or shoulders
- Severe chest pain
- Persistent intense pain
on one or both calfs
- Numbness in the face or
extremities
- Loss of control of body a
part (limbs, face, tongue)
You may have noticed a common theme in
the list above is persistent or unrelenting pain. This is pain that
doesn’t fluctuate much if at all. THAT’S A RED FLAG.
Although numbness and tingling aren’t always ominous they should be
evaluated quickly. This is because when it is due to a serious condition
the faster you get help the less likely you are to end up with a
permanent condition.
Here are symptoms that are less ominous but important to address soon so
you can avoid financial, emotional, and physical challenges. These
actually GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY to get ahead and avoid any major impact
on your life.
- Pain and/or numbness down your
glut and/or back of your thigh
- Pinching pain on top of
the shoulder joint
- Pain under the kneecap
- Numbness in all fingers
or specific fingers
- Numbness in the feet
and/or toes
On these less urgent symptoms, although
they are not life-threatening, ignoring them for months and years can
certainly lead to a very expensive and painful experience with a surgeon.
As an example, the pinchy shoulder shouldn’t be put off for more than a
few weeks. It’s one of the more common and surprisingly impactful of the
less ominous symptoms.
If it is ignored it could lead to rotator cuff surgery with a painful
year-long recovery. The healing process with this is a real slog and
often includes sleeping in a chair for a few weeks while enduring a high
level of pain. It’s pretty miserable.
The thing is most of these less threatening issues can be avoided because
they are SIMPLY DUE TO CHRONIC MISALIGNMENT and dysfunctional movement.
Most chronic misalignment is due to muscle and fascia imbalance. And as
you might know from working with me misalignment is pretty EASY TO FIX. A
fully torn rotator cuff tendon is not.
The other cool thing about getting help is that you learn how to reduce
the symptoms yourself avoiding potential drama in the future.
You learn self-care and therapeutic exercise techniques. These ELIMINATE
THE UNDERLYING MISALIGNMENT. And if the symptoms reappear you can often
make them go away on your own by using the techniques you learned.
Let me know if you have any questions. As always, I’m truly grateful to
you for letting me help you. I’m always here for you and your loved
ones.
Sincerely Yours,
Mike Julien
